How to Get Your Tax File Number (TFN) in Australia

The complete guide for Working Holiday Visa holders

Last verified: April 2026 · Source: Australian Taxation Office

The 30-second version

Your TFN is a unique 9-digit number that identifies you in Australia's tax system. You need it to work legally. Apply on the day you arrive. It takes up to 28 days to arrive by post, and until you have it your employer must withhold tax at 45% instead of 15%. The application is free, takes about 20 minutes online, and you don't need to send any documents.

Why this is urgent

Without TFN

45%

tax withheld on every dollar

$1,000 earned → $450 tax → $550 take home

With TFN

15%

tax withheld on first $45,000

$1,000 earned → $150 tax → $850 take home

That's $300 per week difference. You can claim the overtaxed amount back at the end of the financial year — but why wait months for your own money?

What you need before you apply

Gather these before you sit down — it makes the 20-minute process much smoother:

Your passportthe one linked to your visa — you'll need the number and your name exactly as it appears
Your visa grant numberfrom your visa grant notification email — helpful but not always required
An Australian postal addresswhere your TFN letter will be mailed — hostel, friend's place, or rental address all work
An Australian mobile numberget your SIM card sorted first
A valid email address

Important: Make sure your device is set to an Australian time zone before starting. The system is known to throw errors if your phone or laptop is still on your home country's timezone.

Who can apply

You can apply online using the ATO's Individual Auto Registration system if you meet all three conditions:

1.You are a temporary visitor or permanent migrant (not an Australian citizen)
2.You are physically located in Australia
3.You have a valid visa with work rights (subclass 417 or 462 both qualify)

You cannot apply before you arrive in Australia. The system checks your visa status with the Department of Home Affairs in real time.

Step-by-step application

1

Go to the ATO's IAR page

Navigate to ato.gov.au/iar — this is the only legitimate free way to apply online. Warning: third-party websites charge $30–$80 to fill in the same free form on your behalf. Don't pay for this.

2

Confirm your eligibility

The first screen asks you to confirm you're a foreign passport holder, you're in Australia, and you have a valid visa with work rights. Tick the boxes and proceed.

3

Enter your identity details

Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport (middle names matter), date of birth, gender, passport number, and country of passport. The system verifies your identity with the Department of Home Affairs — if details don't match your visa, the application will fail.

4

Enter your contact details

Add your Australian postal address (this is where your TFN letter gets mailed — use format "Your Name, C/- Hostel Name, Street" if using a hostel), your home country address, Australian mobile number, and email address.

5

Answer tax history questions

Have you had a TFN or ABN before? Have you lodged a tax return in Australia? Do you own Australian property? For most first-time WHMs, the answer to all of these is No.

6

Review and submit

Check everything is correct. The system shows a summary — confirm and submit.

7

Save your receipt

After submitting, you'll receive an ATO receipt ID. Screenshot this or write it down. This is your proof of application and you'll need it to follow up if your TFN doesn't arrive within 28 days.

After you apply

The ATO will process your application and post your TFN to the Australian address you provided. This takes up to 28 days.

Your TFN notification letter will contain your 9-digit Tax File Number, your name and date of birth, and your residency status. Do NOT lodge another application if you haven't received it yet — duplicate applications cause delays.

If your TFN hasn't arrived after 28 days

Call the ATO on 13 28 61 (Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm AEST). Have your ATO receipt ID ready. They can look up your application status and often provide your TFN over the phone. If you need language support, call the translation service on 13 14 50 first.

Can you start working without a TFN?

Yes — you can legally start working before receiving your TFN. However, your employer must withhold tax at 45% until you provide it. You have 28 days from starting work to give your employer your TFN via a Tax File Number Declaration form. Any tax overpaid during this period will be refunded when you lodge your tax return.

Pro tip: Apply for your TFN immediately on arrival, even before you start job hunting. By the time you find a job and complete your first week, your TFN may have already arrived.

Your tax rate as a Working Holiday Maker

WHMs are taxed differently from Australian residents and other foreign workers:

IncomeTax Rate
$0 – $45,00015%
$45,001 – $135,000$6,750 + 30% of amount over $45,000
$135,001 – $190,000$33,750 + 37% of amount over $135,000
$190,001+$54,100 + 45% of amount over $190,000

No tax-free threshold. Unlike Australian residents, you are taxed from the first dollar — there is no $18,200 tax-free amount for WHMs. The vast majority of WHMs earn under $45,000 in a financial year, so 15% is effectively your flat tax rate.

Common problems and fixes

"The system says it can't verify my identity"

Check your passport number is entered correctly, your name matches your passport exactly (including middle names), and your device timezone is set to Australia. The system cross-checks with Home Affairs in real time.

"I changed hostels and my TFN letter went to the old address"

Call the ATO on 13 28 61. They can confirm whether your TFN has been issued, provide it over the phone with identity verification, and update your address to resend the letter.

"I already had a TFN from a previous trip"

Your TFN is yours for life. If you've worked in Australia before, you already have one. Check old payslips, bank statements, or your myGov account. You can also call the ATO to retrieve it.

"My employer says they can't accept my receipt as proof"

Your ATO receipt ID isn't a legal substitute for a TFN. But reasonable employers understand the 28-day wait. They should let you start work with 45% withholding and adjust to 15% once you provide your actual TFN.

Protecting your TFN

Your TFN is sensitive personal information. Treat it like your national insurance number (UK), social security number (US/Canada), or any other national tax identifier.

Do give it to

Your employer, your bank, your super fund, the ATO

Do NOT give it to

Random people, dodgy employers before hiring, anyone via text or social media, any website that isn't the ATO

If you suspect your TFN has been compromised, contact the ATO immediately on 1800 467 033 (identity security helpline).
